which is darker? Look again...

Which surface looks darker? The top or the bottom?

Now cover edge connecting the surfaces (you can just put your finger right over it). Which looks darker now?

The two surfaces are actually identical, but our brains perceive a brightness difference in part because of the luminance changes right at the edge.

This is a really strong example of the Cornsweet Illusion , named after vision scientist Tom Cornsweet who did a great deal of research on the illusion many years ago. In the illusion, the positive and negative luminance gradients at the edge lead to the perception of vastly different surfaces: a dark luminance gradient leads to the adjoining surface being seen darker; a light luminance gradients leads to the adjoining surface being seen lighter. Covering the edge - where the luminance gradients occur - enables you to see that the two surfaces are actually exactly the same.

Share these 5 tips if your phone has ever taken a swim...

1. Take it out of the water! This might sound obvious but it's important that you get your phone away from the source of moisture a soon as possible to minimize damage.

2. Once you're phone is out from harm's way, the first thing you should do is take out you're SIM card or any removable components. If you're phone has a removable battery, take this out too - this will prevent the phone from short circuiting.

3. Dry the phone and all parts with a clean dry cloth or towel. Try to avoid paper towels as bits of paper can get struck in the phone and prevent it from working. DO NOT use a hairdryer, as this may push water further into the phone.

4. Leave the phone overnight somewhere warm and dry (next to a radiator is good, or you can put it on a bag of rice or wrap it on a towel to help absorb some of the excess moisture).

5. Once you've done all these things and you're phone is dry, put you're phone back together and test it. If it turns on then you're good to go! Remember, if you get you're phone working again, make sure to back-up any data that you want to keep.

Instagram Announces Android Version (free download)

Today at SXSW, Instagram's Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger told Alexia Tsotsis that an Android version of the app is coming "really soon." We've heard this for several months now, but it seems that the app is finally getting close to launch. On stage, Systrom pulled out a Galaxy Nexus running a prototype of the app, and flashed it at the crowd. He said, "it's one of the most amazing Android apps you'll ever see," and continued, "in some ways, it's better than our iPhone app." The app is currently in private beta, and the team hopes "to have it out to people really soon." During the session's Q&A, he added that the Android app is incredibly fast, works great on a range of larger screens, and has sharing functionality with Tumblr, Twitter, Facebook, and other social networks.
Additionally, Systrom confirmed that Instagram has grown to over 27 million registered users, nearly double the 15 million announced back in December 2011. He explained much of the enormous growth came from the launch of the iPhone 4S, followed by Apple highlighting the app as App of the Year.
